The Adriatic Sea was
named after the former Italian port Adria, which is now 38km from the sea.
The
colour of the Adriatic Sea is
unique. It is difficult to give an exact description, as it is sometimes greenish blue,
sometimes deep blue,
depending on the time of day.
The
sea temperature in summer is
25-27? C, in spring up to 18?C, and in the
wintertime around 11? C.
The
salinity is higher in the south.
The
sea depth increases towards the
south. The sea is the shallowest in Istria, up to 50m. The deepest
point in the Adriatic is 1300m.
Tides show relatively small
amplitudes. The difference between the high and low tide is 1m in the
northern Adriatic and 40cm in the southern part.
Currents are generally weak with
an average speed of 0,5 – 4 knots. The Adriatic Sea is not a
dangerous and capricious sea. Wave height ranges between 0.5 and
1.5m (rarely 5m).
Waves are raised by the winds.
Typical winds are:
Bura, which blows from the
hinterland towards the sea, is a dry, cold and unpredictable wind.
Although it is typical for the winter months, it blows occasionally
throughout the year. After a windy spell, clear and sunny weather
usually follows. Waves are short, with white, foamy tops.
Jugo blows from the sea towards the mainland, and
brings moist air accompanied by rain. It blows mostly from autumn to
spring and its waves are long, silent and foamless.
Maestral is a summer breeze and a
sign of fine weather.
Nevera is a sudden storm
caused by a western gale, which doesn't last long but causes a rough
and choppy sea. The storm is followed by cool, refreshing air.
The blue
flag
signifies a pleasant, safe and preserved environment for rest and
recreation. It is a symbol of sustainable tourism and a well-planned development
of the coastal belt. Many governmental bodies and civil associations
contribute to the
preservation of the Adriatic Sea.
The
blue flag means top
publicity for a marina or beach, as it is awarded for a clean sea
and seaside, high standard of service and beach facilities. The
quality of the sea is regularly checked and assessed and meets the
highest standards on over 800 beaches.
